My most fulfilling memory as a young lad involved my magical summer with my pet horse Sparky. Sparky and I would gallop through the Northern Wisconsin countryside while admiring the wonders of nature. Me and Sparks would even eat our meals together. The steady diet of carrots and hay kept my visions strong and my bowel movements regular. As I would ride my horsey, I felt the pangs of joy reach up through my loins. It was a feeling I would not feel again until my sexual awakening six years later.
Sadly, the Sparky's food bill was too out of control for our modest farmland budget. It tore my heart to shreds when my evil step-dad took away my little pony to be ground up into glue and hot dogs. I cried for three straight weeks up until my sixteenth birthday, where I was given a rocking horse that filled the gaping void missing from my empty heart.
What wondrous animal moments have all you people had?

This weekend I was at work, and my one coworker put on a mix CD. The first song on it was Gwen Stefani's "The Sweet Escape" featuring Akon. The following exchange of dialogue actually happened.
Coworker: I love Akon.
Me: Like squirrels. ...love acorns.
So that was a semi-magical moment of awkward majesty related to animals. I find it's best to play the word association game when the people you're with don't know that it's game on.
So when I was about ten years old, I begged my parents to let my sister and I get a hamster. After pestering them for several weeks they gave in. I bought all the fun hamster toys and accessories for my hamster and I even named him Speedy. After having my hamster for about two years I noticed a black spot on his neck. I thought nothing of it until one night I came home and I went and picked my hamster up while I was half paying attention to find that Speedy no longer had a head. His head was nowhere to be found. Later I learned that Speedy had a tumor in his neck that had burst thus causing his head to disappear. I will never forget the site when I was holding the lifeless, headless body of that hamster.
Last spring I was walking along a favorite trail of mine that is less than a mile from UWM. The trail is just off of lake drive and it winds through the woods only to end up on a secluded beach. Four other friends and I were there because, although it was cloudy, it was one of the warmest days of the new year. Heading back up the densely wooded trail, only about fifty yards from lake drive, we saw a deer standing not more than 12 feet from us and another only a few feet behind the first. I've seen deer many times in my life, but I'd never seen them that close (other than a petting zoo)...just standing there - and in the city no less! Seeing them there, I could tell that one was as tall as I was and I could see it looking back and measuring us up too. It was so big and 'real' it amazed me...sometimes it's easy to forget that we share this place with other large and powerful creatures. Recently, Elephants in India have begun trampling loggers and urban sprawlers encroaching further and further into their habitat. When will we learn?
Ummm nothing to wonderous in the animal department. My childhood dog, although did have a twist to her story. When I was six we had to put my beloved Doberman Pincher to sleep. I too had a void after his death. And so my family decided to get another dog. We were a fan of big dogs, so we decided to get this puppy that was part Golden Retriever and we thought the dad was the Black Lab across the street. Well, long story short, after a few weeks our puppy stopped growing, well she did grow length-wise. It turns out the father was the black Wiener Dog from down the street. So no we have a Golden Wiener or a Wiener Retriever...which ever you prefer.
James, that was the saddest hamster story I've ever heard! My little sister and I had two hamsters when we were younger that we were told were both male...turns out, not so much. One was a female and got pregnant and had like, a million babies that we had to deal with. (Sorry, animals have not changed my life in any drastic way...that's all I got.)
Also, I hadn't heard about the elephants, but on World News Tonight a couple weeks ago I saw a town in India? where humans had moved in on some sort of monkey territory and the monkeys were breaking into the houses and eating their food...I think these kinds of issues are difficult to avoid in India which is the most densely populated country in the world...
Not going to lie, I don't have any magical stories with animals in them. However, I did get a rabbit from an ex-boyfriend that I called Leo. To make a long and boring story short my roommate and I gave it to her mom's classroom and they found out it was a girl. So, LeO became LeAH. It kind of made sense because her hair stared falling out and stuff, probably due to her identity crisis. Weird and pointless story I know! On another note, I had a dream about this class last night...awkward...
Apparently it wasn't India, it was South Africa. (If anyone was interested...and I'm sure you were)
First off, James, that was the most horrible story ever. I’m sorry.
Now my most amazing animal experience has to do with my kitty Lily. Literally one of the best days of my life was when I took the trip down to Chicago to pick up my little white runt kitten fur ball and bring her back to Milwaukee.
Now you must understand, all I wanted my whole life was a cat and I would beg my parents constantly. They always said no, so fish was all I had for most of my life. Finally I convinced them to let me adopt one of my brother’s ex girlfriend’s salamander and then later on we got a bird. We went through a few birds in middle and high school (one flew away, one died of contaminated food, and one bled to death) and now my parents still have a cockatiel named Shania (yes, like the country singer---we didn’t name her!). This was never fulfilling for me so when I moved into an apartment last May, I knew this was the time to get a cat finally.
I looked on petfinder.com for many weeks until I saw her picture. She was precious. She was all the way in Chicago, but it was well worth the drive.
Well, 11 months later Lily is now one year old. She actually had her birthday yesterday. She has been amazing and I love her to death! She’s not the best kitty, she gets into trouble every once in a while, but she’s a little one, you’ll have that. She’s also not really a cuddler (she’s part Siamese) either which makes me sad. But really, she is the best thing ever and I’m so happy that I got her. I have been thinking of getting another kitten when I move to California but I know he/she would probably not live up to my expectations after having such a beautiful and wonderful kitten (wow I really do sound like a mom).
I also have a non-magical, sad hamster related story. No more than a month ago, while visiting my mom in my home town, we decided to explore the new Petco that had opened. We looked at all of the animals and we could not stop watching the dwarf hamsters, especially the little albino one who was running on the wheel like crazy. I knew right then and there I had to have her and my mom bought her, along with all of the fun accessories, as an early birthday present. I named her Tutu panna, which my mom said was Italian for whipped cream. I had a great 3 weeks with my hamster until a week ago; she started moving around like her back legs didn't work. Knowing that I couldn't afford pet bills for a $14 hamster, I wished for the best and two days later found her dead in the corner of her cage. It's amazing how attached you can get to something in less than a month. So as my mom came to town to celebrate my birthday last Wednesday, I had to cope with having a dead hamster as my birthday present.
About four years ago my now ex-boyfriend and I purchased a dog together. A miniture pinscher named Hercules. He is the closest I ever want to having children (I know I'm pathetic) and he is spoiled to the core.
Well, when my boyfriend (who technically purchased Hercules) decided he wanted to take away my little puppy after we broke up, I experienced my first panic/anxiety attack. I don't think I've ever cried so hard in my life. Luckily, I convinced my ex that if I paid for half the dog that he would give him back to me.
I know he's just a dog, but Hercules is MY baby.
WTF!!!!!! i have no idea what i just read but it was funny as all hell.... i dont have animals like that but i had a cat named spike... hope that helps.
I didn't know they made hot dogs from dead horses. Oh, and I wouldn't compare my sexual awakening to my time spent alone with a horse. Just a suggestion. haha, great story though, very creative.
I owned a cat my sophomore year, Booker. He was really cool. We had to give him away because of my lame landlord. Oh well.
