Opening Day...

I hope this isn't too late but I got completely caught up in work...I have the "honor" of working at Friday's Front Row at Miller Park and you guessed it, I'm on my way to work the season opener for the Brewers. It is going to be absolute chaos and I am completely envious of all of the people that get to enjoy the weather and get wasted with all of their friends. In addtion to my bartending job at Miller Park I also work at an office in Brookfield. So, where do you all work? Do you work? And if you are at the game, make sure to come in and see me!

I'm a Community Assistant at the Kenilworth Square apartments - the new residence hall that the university opened this year, down by the Oriental theater and Ma Fischer's. Most of what I do is security duty type stuff at nights, and shifts at the main desk, but we also do programming and events for residents. It's like the RAs at Sandburg only with a little less resident contact; things are set up like apartments down here and we have a lot of upper level and graduate students. It's a pretty sweet gig.

I am a copywriting intern at Direct Supply. I write copy and proof for marketing and HR. I write flyers, brochures, copy for our catalog, letters, mailers, etc. I really love what I do, and I hope to continue down this career path.

Oye. Where don’t I work? Here I go.

Job number one is UWM Graduate School Admissions office. I have been working there since August 2004. I am a data entry assistant (aka I enter graduate applications, file things away, take lists and find and distribute things to examiners, etc., etc., etc.).

Job number two is the UWM Post. I write editorials, fashion articles, CD reviews and other various articles. I’ve been working there since August 2004. I don’t write very frequently because I’m busy writing for job number three.

JIVE Magazine is my third job. It is an entertainment magazine out of Atlanta. I get to go to free movie premieres and free concerts and interview my favorite bands, and then write a review about it for their website. I have been working here since June 2006.

Job number four, five and six go together in a sense because they are all promotional companies I work for. OSSM Staffing, Attack! Marketing and In Field Promotion. I have been working for all three of them since September 2006. Basically I get to go to Brewers games, Packer games, or various other places and give out various freebies or samples and coupons. I get paid to be pretty basically. I like it.

And remember…I do all of this on top of school full-time and I was just in knee rehab for the past 8 weeks. That is almost over…but knee rehab will be replaced with working out. It’s a crazy life, but someone has to do it.

I have worked at the Peer Mentoring Center for the last two years. The main service that we do is offer walk-in tutoring to students. We serve a lot of nontraditional students. My job is really rewarding and I am going to miss it next year. The Peer Mentoring Center will be closing its doors forever in May.
I also work at the Kenilworth Service Desk at Sandburg Halls which involves doing various customer service tasks for the residents and providing security 24 hours a day.

Nope, never had a job in my four years of college. I kind of made it a point not to have a job while I was enrolled in school. I wanted to focus on my education and I had the mentality that I'll be working for the rest of my life. So, while I'm young and able, I'll just study and party. But don't get me wrong, its not like I could afford it. I'm in debt up to my elbows. But I have had summer jobs each of the last four years, so that defintely helped. See you at Miller Park on Friday Lindsey!

I actually just got a new job last week. I have been an optician for 3 years now and for the last 2 worked at JCPenney Optical. They recently screwed me over on a promotion, so I applied elsewhere and was lucky enough to get a job at Metro Eye in the 3rd Ward. If I had to describe this place in one word, it would be "swanky." I've gone from selling $100 glasses, to having sales over $1000. I go full-time here after I graduate which is fine by me because the money is great and I have no idea what area of journalism I want to get into yet.

I've worked for just over two years at the deli in Sendik's whitefish bay. Obviously, the job can get monotonous and sometimes it sucks to stand on your feet for 9 hours. However, there are a lot of cool people that work there and I really see work as just another place I go to hang out with friends. If you don't like the people you work with, it would be impossible for me to work for so little. Why should I have to pay to exist anyway? (rent, food, etc.) Isn't it odd that even if you were willing to grow your own food and live off the land without any of the benefits of civilization you couldn't do it legally? You'd still have to buy land and pay property tax...I guess we are the freest slaves in the world.

I've been working at Pick N Save for almost 6 years! Since I have been there so long, I get paid well for being a supervisor, which basically means I just talk to people for 8 hours straight, whether it be other employees or customers. And when stuff goes wrong at the registers or people are complaining, I have to fix it and keep people happy.

I also work at The Leader, a campus newspaper. I'm the news editor. Sometimes it's hard to think of story ideas because I'm so busy and can't be as involved on campus as I'd like to be.

I also work for Birds & Blooms magazine and Backyard Living magazine as an editorial intern. It's really fun even though I read and write about flowers and birds and stuff.

I can't wait for the day I can say I only have one job...

I sling coffe at Grind in the Union, I'm sure you've all seen me behind the counter with my god-awful visor and apron. I love coffee though, so it works. I'm happy to be done after my 2 1/2 years there, starting when it opened and finishing when I'm graduating. I also work at the Broadway theatre center in the third ward selling theater tickets. I also love theatre so the free tickets are a great bonus.
