Since we’re all in the JMC capstone course, one thing we all have in common is either a JMC major or minor. If I remember our introductions correctly, I’m in the minority because I am only a JMC minor. My major is film studies, which is exactly as awesome as it sounds. I get credit to watch movies and then write about them. So, yes, I see a lot of movies, and I tend to talk about movies all the time.
Last night I saw “Road House” for the first time ever and it blew my mind. In case you’re not familiar, that’s the one where Patrick Swayze plays a world famous bouncer with a degree in philosophy who gets hired to clean up a rough-and-rowdy bar in Kansas. The plot is kind of complicated, actually, but it’s not important as long as you can accept that at some point the film stops being about bar fights and turns into kind of a “Rambo” style killing spree/revenge movie. Swayze actually rips a man’s throat out with his bare hands.
“Road House” got me thinking. This isn’t the most creative question in the world, but what are some of your guilty pleasure movies? A movie that you’re kind of embarrassed to like, and everyone else thinks it’s totally cheesy, but you’ve seen about a million times and kind of love anyway. I don’t have much shame when it comes to movies – I’ll see just about anything once. Still, I know I should be embarrassed about how many times I’ve seen “The Craft”. Yes, this one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115963/ . It reminds me of middle school. (I hung out with the sort-of wannabe goth kids, but I was the token non-goth. Long story.) To this day, if “The Craft” comes on cable at 2 am, I know I’m not going to be able to go to bed until it’s done. It has the two main things you need from a mid-90s teen movie: it’s quotable and Robin Tunney is in it (see also “Empire Records”).
Your turn. What ridiculous, cheesy, lame, or otherwise embarrassing movies do you secretly (or not so secretly) enjoy?

You know what? I think Trading Places and Coming to America are two of the best movies ever made!! I know they're quite lame, but I can't get enough of these movies. Really, I think Don Ameche should've won an Oscar for his role as one of the Duke's.
I'm quite embarrassed to admit that one of my favorite movies is Clueless. I know most of the lines from the movie by heart. I haven't seen it in quite some time now, but now that it's brought up I'm going to have to pull it out again. My current favorite movie that I watch over and over again is The Wedding Date. If you can't tell, I'm a sucker for chick flicks....
About halfway through your post, I knew exactly what movie is my Cheese-laden favorite. My friends make fun of me but whatever. Remember that movie That Thing You Do? Man, whenever that flick is on, I can't shut it off. I think that it plays on my secret fantasy of being a rock n' roll star and playing in front of thousands of screaming fans. By the way, Road House is a righteous movie.
I'm not embarrassed about the movie itself, but the amount of times I've seen it; The Princess Bride. It is a classic PG romance tale but I could quote it by heart. I have also seen the newer version of Romeo and Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes about a million times. How they changed the ending to her waking up and him still being alive was amazing. The first time I saw it I got that feeling you get after seeing a really good movie and it lasted for days.
Two of my favorite movies are Bring It On and Grosse Pointe Blank. I find both movies a bit quirky. Plus, they both have some fun music. I especially love the high-tech cheerleading/gymnastic routines in Bring It on.
Sadly, almost all the posted movies already are some of my cheesy favorites. And the sad thing is, is that all of my favorites ARE those cheesy ones you fear telling people. (Mind you, I have had people blankly look at me and ask me if I am kidding). But not oddly enough, I love all those girly 80's movies: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Dirty Dancing, Flashdance, Footloose, Pretty in Pink. Actually, anytime one of those oldie (but goodies!) style movies comes on TBS or TNT, I'm a sucker and cant shut it off!
I kinda felt bad because everyone is only posting on Dave's blog...but how can we ignore the opportunity to make people say "omg...she likes THAT movie..I DO TOO"? While reading Dave's original post I immediately thought of some cheesy movies that I love. I absolutely am a sucker for Bring it On & Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2. My best friend and I in high school probably watched Legally Blonde once a week. After reading what other people wrote...I must agree with Kirsten that Clueless is amazing. One of the best cheesy movies out there.
My guilty pleasure movie is Serpico. It's spray cheese on top of chedder and swiss. It's a true story about a NY officer named Frank Serpico (Al Pacino). He goes up against his fellow co-workers in the force who are taking bribes from some shady criminals (money in return for police protection). Anyway, the movie is full of cheesy 70s cop/soap opera-type music, some laughable dialogue and F bombs throughout (yeah Al Pacino -- he never fails us). But it is a Pacino film and he's one bad ass dude.
I have many guilty pleasure movies. I like really bad horror movies like Cabin Fever and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I am also a big fan of teen movies like The 10 Things I Hate About You and all the other ones with quarky titles. In addition to that I am a die-hard Paulie Shore fan. I watch the movie Son-In-Law religiously. Bio-Dome is a close second.
I'm going to have to side totally agree with abby on this one, I love love love 80's movies!! Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club, Dirty Dancing, Sixteen Candles, Footloose...the list goes on and on! I'd have to add Pretty Woman, When Harry met Sally, ALL of the Godfathers, Orange County (the movie!) and both Father of the Bride movies to my list of movies I not-so-secretly adore!
Two movies I can both quote and CANNOT stop watching if they are on TV are action packed Jurassic Park and Independence Day. I still get nervous everytime the kids are in the kitchen with the raptors. I also choke up everytime the President makes the 'big speech'. I also agree with the Pauly Shore movies because Encino Man is another one I deffinlity own. Son in Law and Bio-Dome, priceless!
Well when I think of cheesy, the movie that comes to my mind I think won the academy award for most cheese compiled in a 90 minute movie. That movie is "killer clowns from outer space". I don’t know if anyone is familiar with this but it involves a carnival with clowns, horrible fun houses, and clowns from cocoons, also, not to mention that the only way to kill them is by popping their noses. Let’s just say you can’t spell cheesy with out killer clowns from outer space
